Shaffer, David Williamson, et al. “Video Games and the Future of Learning.” The Phi Delta Kappan, vol. 87, no. 2, 2005, pp. 104–111. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/20441942.

This article argues that videogames can be an important tool in learning, especially since we are coming into an age where so much of the way we interact and engage is digitized. As a new type of social interaction, video games let the players “participate in new worlds” (105) and allows he or she to engage in new roles that otherwise could not be experienced by him or her. This helps the player learn and grow, especially if these games are catered to something specific (critical thinking, team-building, etc.). Ideally, games will evolve to include specific practice in fields of study like medicine or architecture, while building communities of gamers as well. This article looks at gaming as a positive asset to learning, and a transformative practice.
