Video games are an outlet for people of many different ages to learn a diverse amount of skills and vast information that is useful in everyday life. Video games can teach us cognitive skills, history, creativity, and sometimes about mental illness. They teach us in an interactive fashion that draws the player into a fun and immersive world without feeling like a learning experience. I will prove this point through explaining different games and their corresponding aspects of play that seek to teach players. Games like Destiny 2 or Overwatch (Teamwork), Hellblade (Psychosis and Mental Illness), Fable (Sense of morals), Assassin’s Creed (A loose base of history), Civ Rev (Strategy), Portal (Spacial Awareness, Problem Solving), Dark Souls (Motivational), and Minecraft (Creativity) can teach players many different things. Using these examples, Isabela Granic’s article “The Benefits of Playing Video Games” among other articles, and my own personal experience, I can show how video games directly teach players.
