As discussed within this piece, the idea of an obstructed division between reality and virtuality is ever investigated. The idea of mimetic gaming isn’t new, but, as this text proffers, the line between the two worlds is increasingly thinning, with purposefully genre/media-bending discourses being discovered and implemented. More so than almost any other visual media, video games in particular allow for a realistic outlet that is separated by its agency. A player can become their avatar with the right boundaries, and this article adds to the act of doing so. Particularly ubiquitous gaming comes to mind, wherein real life directly impacts the virtual ones.Though this piece acts as an academic “how to” manual for breaking that ‘fifth’ virtual wall, and is benign in doing so, the social narrative therein is of imperative import for a technology obsessed modern society.
