Ryan, Marie-Laure. Narrative as Virtual Reality 2: Revisiting Immersion in Literature and Electronic Media. Baltimore: John Hopkins University Press, 2015. Print.
This book aims to examine the interplay between interaction with a text and subsequent immersion for the reader, viewer, player, etc. Marie-Laure Ryan argues that video games, as an emerging medium, establishes the connection between textual interactivity and immersion, which increases the text’s narrativity as a result. This assertion is further elaborated on by examples of video games (particularly Online RPG’s) that place the player in vividly constructed worlds where players must navigate a society of other members.
