`We have made a game about becoming a certified teacher in Pennsylvania, specifically at West Chester University of PA. The game consists of the various hoops that preservice teachers must jump through each year in order to graduate on time in four years with a teaching license and degree. Some of these hoops include: PAPA/CORE testing, Community Service Experience, Formal Admission to Teacher Education (FATE), English BSED Writing Portfolio, and the Praxis exam. The game is played in chronological order based on the same path we have to follow from freshman to senior year. For example, the PAPA/CORE testing and CSE must be completed within the first year and a half of your program, and the Praxis is completed at the end of all coursework. Every milestone must be completed with either a quantified value (i.e., a score such as on a PAPA exam) or a PASS/FAIL (i.e., English BSED Writing Portfolio). The game will be a role playing game in which the player has to complete each step in order to move onto the next. There are required actions the player must complete in order to finish each step. If the player fails to complete their actions, they are forced to restart from the beginning. The beginning being acceptance into West Chester University and the end being Graduation. The point of our game is to illustrate the difficulty and complexity of the student certification process.

Hey Steph!
You guys’ game sounds really interesting to me as someone who also has to go through the whole, congested process of hoop-jumping for the Education side of a B.S.Ed. It’s tiring, stressful, and just annoying to get everything all prepared in the exact order and manner that we have to. The strict timing of everything has a tendency to loom over our experience with the education department.
I’m particularly looking forward to seeing how you guys end up making your game fun to play! We all know bureaucratic processes are a total blast, but I can’t wait to see what elements you add to your game that will make it enjoyable to play. Maybe some comedy? Maybe some horror? Maybe some crazy, meta stuff going on that critiques the system as you navigate through it?
I know you guys will rock this, whichever route you take or style you go for.
Hey guys!
This sounds like a super interesting idea for a game, especially since I know nothing about the steps to becoming a teacher…they sound really complicated! In the game, will the student actually have to take the Praxis Exam and PA/CORE testing, etc? Or will there just be a few questions, or will they have the option to study/not study/study a little bit, and then their decision there leads to their success with the exams? How long do you anticipate play time to be? Overall, this sounds like a really interesting game/concept. I’m wondering how it will appeal to players who aren’t pursuing an education degree from West Chester? Or, is that the only intended audience?
I’m really looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with! This is a really interesting and unique idea! Great job 🙂
